Abstract
Russian historical sources are very important for the study of 17th–19th century Kyrgyz history. These sources are subdivided into three categories: archive materials, diaries of diplomats and travelers, and valuable works by scholars. The archived official documents comprise diplomatic letters to governors of the Central Asian states, reports and memorandums by Russian officials, diaries of Russian ambassadors, diplomats and travelers, and works by Russian scientists. The article explains the ethnic names of the predominantly Shantoriou (Tien Shan) Kyrgyz. The data originates from Russian historical sources and are given in chronological order. At that time, the term “Kyrgyz” was used to identify the ancestors of the modern Kazakhs (the main population of the Republic of Kazakhstan) and the Khakas (Yenisey Kyrgyz or Siberian Kyrgyz – indigenous people of the Republic of Khakassia of the Russian Federation), which makes it difficult to use these historical sources in scholarly research. We have therefore made an attempt to systematically record the ethnic names of the Kyrgyz in Russia. Information about their religious beliefs is also given.
