Born February 19, 1955 in the Burnak village of the Baltasinsky district of the Tatar ASSR.

  • 1977 – graduated from the History and Philology Faculty of Kazan State University with a degree in History, Teacher of Social studies.
  • 1980 – graduated from post-graduate studies of Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Kazan branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, majoring in History of Philosophy.

Employment activity

  • In 1977–1984 and 1992–1995 - junior and senior researcher of Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Kazan branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1997 – Institute of Language, Literature and Art named after Galimjan Ibragimov of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan).
  • 1984-1992 - senior lecturer, associate professor of the Department of Social Sciences at the Kazan Conservatory.
  • 1996–2006 - Head of the Department of Scientific and Methodological Work and Control of the Institute of the Tatar Encyclopedia of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan
  • 2001–2011 - Head of the Department of Public Thought and Islamic Studies of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan
  • Since 2006 - Rector of Russian Islamic University
  • 2010–2014 - Director of the Center for Islamic Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan
  • 2010-2017 - Professor of the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Philosophy of Kazan Federal University

Rafik M. Mukhametshin as an Islamic scholar is widely known to the academic community of Russia and abroad. The range of his academic interests is extensive: the history of Tatar social thought, Islamic studies and political processes in Russia and the modern world. He is the author of about 120 research papers, including 10 monographs.

In his research of the 1970-90s Rafik M. Mukhametshin analyzed various aspects of Tatar social thought, especially the development of spiritual culture and the role of the religious factor in these processes.

From the mid-90's onwards R. M. Mukhamtshin’s research interests have concentrated in the field of Islamic studies. His research in this direction is reflected in the monographs “Tatars and Islam in the Twentieth Century” (Kazan, 2003) and “Islam in the Public and Political Life of the Tatars and Tatarstan” (Kazan, 2005), which were highly appreciated by the academic community.

Rafik M. Mukhametshin is a member of the authoring teams of a number of international publications. In 1997 the collection "L'islam de Russie" (Paris, 1997) was issued under his editorship. In 2002 R.M. Mukhametshin participated in the writing the monograph “Islam in Post-soviet Russia. Public and private faces” (London and New York).

R.M. Mukhametshin is a participant of international scholarly conferences in Japan, USA, Turkey, Germany, Great Britain, France, Finland and practically all Muslim countries.

24 Ph.D. theses have been upheld under Rafik M. Mukhametshin’s supervision.

Public activity

Member of the Council for the defense of doctoral theses with a degree in Political Science at Kazan (Volga region) Federal University.

Honorary titles and awards

  • Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan in the field of science and technology (2005).
  • Honorary Professor of the Tatar State Humanitarian-Pedagogical University (2010).
  • Winner of the “Ruhi Miras” Award (2012).
